Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez remains one of the most sought-after fights in boxing.
Alvarez is the WBC, WBO and WBA super-middleweight champion, with an incredible record of 62 wins, just two defeats and two draws.
He has beaten some of the biggest names in boxing throughout his career, including Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Caleb Plant, Jaime Munguia, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and most recently Edgar Berlanga in September.
There is one fighter that fans are clamouring to see him in with though, and that is Benavidez. ‘The Mexican Monster’ is undefeated at 29-0, and after previously being world champion at super-middleweight, has now stepped up to light-heavyweight.
Despite the best efforts of Benavidez to secure the showdown, Alvarez doesn’t currently seem interested in the bout, but that hasn’t stopped two-weight world champion Teofimo Lopez offering his thoughts.
Lopez was ringside when Benavidez became the first man to stop Demetrius Andrade last year and he told Fight Hub TV that he’d back him against Alvarez.
“He did great. Awesome job man. I think he definitely showed that he is that guy in the division … He’s so smart. The Canelo situation, it’s a great match-up, great fight.
“[This version of him] beats Canelo. I like Canelo, man. He’s a well-rounded fighter, however if Canelo is not back to being light on his feet then Benavidez can get this. Not saying it’ll be easy, cause Canelo is smart, he’ll break his arms … If both can understand and master that then we win at the end, the fans.”
Before a potential fight with Canelo can be discussed again, Benavidez must first deal with David Morrell in January, and Alvarez has given his thoughts on that opponent.
