Saul Canelo Alvarez taking on Terence Crawford would be a boxing mega-fight.
The two pound-for-pound stars have been linked to a bout throughout the year ever since Crawford announced he would be willing to step up in weight for the showdown.
Canelo hasn’t weighed less than 166lbs for over five years, meaning Crawford will have to jump all the way up to super-middleweight if the fight takes place.
That has led Teofimo Lopez to make his mind up on the fight, as he told the It Is What It Is podcast that the weight difference will be a major factor and that the potential bout is just a ‘money grab.’
“You’ll see the size measurement on that. You have to go up two more weight classes. It’s no longer just one. The first weight class that he jumped up, he’s having a hard time with [Israil] Madrimov.
He’d only had 10 pro fights against a guy that has 40 undefeated in Crawford, and he gave him a hard time and showed a lot of flaws in him. One year staying out of the competitive ring I think did a lot of damage for him too. The Canelo situation is a money grab, it’s the money show right there.”
Lopez – who has been calling out Crawford himself – said that the American would have to be at his perfect best to have any chance.
“I don’t think he’d outclass like he did with Errol Spence, he’s going to have to put everything and all of his last bits of his prime in him for that fight. Those weight classes are different.
Look at what happened between Canelo against Bivol, that was just one weight class. Crawford has a legacy and has that already stamped, now he just wants to cash out.”
Canelo has said he will listen to offers for the fight and it’s assumed that one will be made soon given that Crawford has decided against a unification against Sebastian Fundora next.
