The debate rages on over how a fight between David Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez would go.
Benavidez spent several years chasing a showdown with Canelo at super-middleweight, but has failed to secure it and has since moved up in weight.
He defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his 175lbs debut in June to win the WBC interim light heavyweight title, and now returns in February when he faces WBA regular light heavyweight champion David Morrell.
Canelo remains the unified super-middleweight champion, having retained his WBC, WBA and WBO titles with a unanimous decision victory against Edgar Berlanga in September.
While a fight between Benavidez and Alvarez is seeming less and less likely as times goes on, that hasn’t stopped a number of big names offering their thoughts on how the match-up would go.
One of those men is Teofimo Lopez, the current WBO super-lightweight champion, who has been a big admirer of both men for a number of years.
Lopez was in attendance in November 2023 when Benavidez stopped Demetrius Andrade after six rounds, and speaking to Fight Hub TV after that fight, he sided with ‘The Mexican Monster’ in a potential bout with Canelo.
“He did great. Awesome job man. I think he definitely showed that he is that guy in the division. He’s so smart. The Canelo situation, it’s a great match-up, great fight.
“[This version of him] beats Canelo. I like Canelo. He’s a well-rounded fighter, however if Canelo is not back to being light on his fight then Benavidez can get this. Not saying it’ll be easy, because Canelo is smart, he’ll break his arms. If both can understand and master that then we win at the end, the fans.”
Lopez has since teamed up with Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso, so it remains to be seen whether he’d stick with his prediction of Benavidez winning the fight.
