Teofimo Lopez is widely regarded as one of the best 140lb fighters on the planet.
Following a shock loss of his unified titles to George Kambosos Jr at lightweight and a subsequent move up, the current WBO super-lightweight champion won the belt with a victory over previously unbeaten Josh Taylor in June 2023 and has since defended it with points wins against Jamaine Ortiz and Steve Claggett.
Lopez is keen to secure a big fight in the near future, with fellow world champions Devin Haney (champion in recess), Liam Paro and Jose Valenzuela all mentioned as potential opponents.
However, there is one man who Lopez feels has a chance of beating him though, after he told the Come And Talk 2 Me podcast that Gervonta Davis could have what it takes to stop him.
“I would say that [fight] doesn’t enter the championship rounds.
Someone is getting knocked out. May the best man win.
I have to give him a fair chance.”
Despite the praise, Lopez went on to say that he feels ‘Tank’ is still yet to fully prove himself.
“If you really look at it, look at the resume, there is a certain limit that you hit and then there is that next criteria and next tier, if you don’t match that you don’t know how great that is.
I’ve done that already, I have jumped out of that box. I have yet to see Gervonta come out of that box yet. They’re about to put him with a guy at 130lbs. Whether he is a champion or not, a guy lighter than you comes up in weight to make you look good. Don’t get me wrong, he has skills but to what level. He hasn’t hit the A-class yet. I’m A class.”
