Terence Crawford enjoyed another championship-winning year in 2024 alongside plenty of high profile and high stakes match-ups.
The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska made a great case for Fighter of the Year back in 2023 when he became undisputed at welterweight with a long-awaited victory over Errol Spence Jr. This year, Crawford fought just once, moving up to super-welterweight and beating Israil Madrimov to win the WBA World Title.
It was one of many big main events over the last twelve months, but it was a co-main that Crawford believes earned the right to be called this year’s best fight.
Speaking on X, formerly Twitter, the four-weight world champion said Katie Taylor‘s rematch with Amanda Serrano deserves the honour.
“Fight of the year again! That was a close fight! Taylor won them last rounds.”
Taylor and Serrano initially did battle in 2022 as the first females to headline at Madison Square Garden. Ireland’s Taylor came out a close split decision points winner to retain her undisputed lightweight status.
This year they met again in Texas on the undercard of the controversial Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson bill. Taylor and Serrano brought legitimacy to the event, starting where they left off this time for Taylor’s four super-lightweight belts.
Despite being wobbled in the first round, ‘KT’ rallied and built up a lead on the scorecards against a gritty Serrano, who suffered a bad cut above her eye from a clash of heads. The fighting pride of Bray, Ireland this time took a unanimous decision with all three judges agreeing on scores of 95-94 after the ten two-minute rounds.
Serrano’s side again feels like they did enough to win and the door has been opened for a trilogy between the two elite operators and future Hall of Famers.
