Terence Crawford has made it clear he’s prepared to step up three weight divisions from his last fight to chase legacy and a big pay day.
Crawford is coming off the best win of his career, dominating and stopping his welterweight rival Errol Spence Jr to become the first man to ever be undisputed champion in two divisions since the start of the four belt era.
Ever since that victory ‘Bud’ has set his sights on super-middleweight unified champion, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez. The clash would represent a 21lb weight jump from the Spence fight.
However, Canelo also doesn’t seem interested in facing the man who many feel is the biggest threat to his 168lb reign – David Benavidez.
Speaking to Fight Hype TV after Benavidez stopped Demetrius Andrade last year, Crawford called for the fight to be made and believes it’s a straight 50/50 matchup.
“He come in behind his jab, he throwing straight punches, going to the body, going up and down, he’s just got to tighten up a little bit on his defence but other than that he’s good, he’s ready for Canelo.
I still got it as a 50/50 fight. Benavidez is good but Canelo is great, we all just want to see the fight. Different styles, different types of fighters, we’ve just got to see the fight, you got two good string fighters going head to head.”
Asked if he would entertain a fight against ‘The Mexican Monster’ if he can’t land the Canelo clash, Crawford was definitive in his response.
“Canelo is the only one.”
