Jaron Ennis forced a stoppage against David Avanesyan in Philadelphia this weekend and was quick to call out former undisputed champion Terence Crawford in the aftermath.
Ennis made the first defence of his IBF World Welterweight Title in good fashion, breaking down Avanesyan and dropping him in the fifth with a quick counter. The challenger – who landed plenty of his own – wouldn’t make the next round, his team informing the referee to call it.
The stoppage came one round quicker than Crawford’s effort against Avanesyan back in 2022, which will of course be used as a bargaining chip to try and make the fight ‘Boots’ has been clear he wants.
‘Bud’ was apparently tuned in and took to social media post-fight to highlight what he sees as a changing of the narrative around ‘Ava’ – he was criticised for the defence whereas he now feels ‘Boots’ has been credited, albeit by his promoter Eddie Hearn, with beating a world class opponent.
“World class fighter now huh? My the double standards be crazy! Eddie Hearn you talk good.”

Responding to a fan who pointed out the quicker finish, Crawford simply replied ‘lol.’

Whilst ‘Bud’s days at welterweight are almost certainly over with, Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh was impressed by Ennis’ showing and said he would like to make the fight in the 154 ranks in the future. Hearn, who would have enjoyed the impressive hometown turnout for his newly-signed man, calls it the best fight in boxing.
