Gervonta Davis shocked boxing fans at his most recent press conference when he announced he would be retiring from the sport at the end of next year.

The knockout artist from Baltimore has won belts in three divisions and become one of the most lucrative fighters today, however there’s little doubt that he has plenty left available to him inside the ropes.

‘Tank’ Davis – who has knocked out 28 of 30 opponents – remains one half of many intriguing match-ups, not least a lightweight unification bout against fellow undefeated champion Shakur Stevenson.

With just twelve months to make it happen along with other fights like moving up in weight to face Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez, there will be plenty left to the imagination.

Hall of Fame fighter Tim Bradley has been critical of ‘Tank’s matchmaking in the past, but on this news told FightHype:

“I don’t blame him.”

Bradley, who retired in 2016 as a former two-weight world champion, expanded by saying he can’t criticise any fighter leaving the sport with their faculties intact.

“This sport ain’t no joke. He’s made a lot of money in the sport, already what it is. I know there’s fights out there that I would love to see Gervonta fight in but if he ain’t feeling it he ain’t feeling it.

I can’t force a man to fight if he don’t want to fight … I’m sure he wants to go out and face guys like [Ryan] Garcia, I’m sure he would want to get in the ring with Jake Paul, cause that’s money. He trying to get the bag and get on out with his wits and be happy. It is what it is.”

Davis starts his farewell tour with a WBA Lightweight World Title defence against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1, 2025.
