Tommy Fury became the first fighter to defeat Jake Paul and has now had his say on a potential clash between his former rival and Anthony Joshua.
Multiple sources have reported in the past week that two-time unified world heavyweight champion ‘AJ’ is set to face Paul in Miami next month, although an official announcement is yet to be made.
Paul was originally scheduled to face reigning WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis before the bout was scrapped after ‘Tank’ found himself at the centre of a domestic violence allegation.
Joshua has been edging closer to his much anticipated return to the ring over the last few weeks, with his last ring appearance coming back in September 2024 when he was stopped in the fifth round of his clash with former IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois.
Tommy Fury has now had his say on the proposed match-up, having become the first and so far only man to defeat Paul when they met back in February 2023, with ‘The Problem Child’ on the wrong end of a split decision defeat.
Speaking to The Stomping Ground when the fight was first being discussed, Fury expressed his disbelief at the possibility of Joshua and Paul sharing the ring, saying ‘it’s just ludicrous.’
“If I can beat Jake Paul, then excuse my French, then what the f**k is ‘AJ’ going to do to Jake Paul. Even if ‘AJ’ had a broken arm in there, it still wouldn’t go past a minute. To be quite honest with you, as a safety aspect, there’s no way that fight can go ahead.
“How are we even talking about this? He got his nut boxed off by me a little over two years ago, and now all of a sudden he’s talking about beating Anthony Joshua. Come on, he can’t be serious. He can’t beat me, and I’m not Anthony Joshua, am I? It’s just ludicrous.”
It has been suggested that Joshua is at risk of tarnishing his legacy should he opt to face Paul next, with many fans and analysts left bewildered at the idea of the former heavyweight champion stepping into the ring against someone who was due to face a lightweight this month.
