Tommy Fury knows what it’s like to get punched by Jake Paul and has now spoken about the American’s power.
The pair fought more than three years ago in what was a first real test for Paul in his seventh bout, while Fury had only fought eight times as a cruiserweight. It was a close contest with plenty of back and forth despite many predicting that Fury’s better boxing background should have made him a clear favourite.
Fury was knocked down in the eighth round but managed to re-establish himself and see out a points win with one judge scoring it 75 – 74 to Paul, while the other two judges had it 76–73 to Fury.
Since then, Paul has beaten the likes of Nate Diaz, Mike Perry, Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez but was knocked out and had his jaw broken by Anthony Joshua last time out.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Fury was asked if Paul had any real power.
“To be honest with you, not that I felt, I’ll be honest. When you see him knocking out Woodley like he did, and other people, flat on their faces, I didn’t feel that power.
“I knew then, when he knocked out Woodley and he fell flat on his face I was like, OK, then, when I got in the ring with him and I didn’t really feel any of that to be honest.
“But listen, I’m not knocking him, he’s only been fighting a short amount of time hasn’t he so all props to him. Listen, we got the fight on once before, so I’m sure we’ll get the fight on again.”
Fury has fought just twice more since that meeting in February 2023 and beat KSI and Kenan Hanjalic but returns to action in June when he takes on strongman Eddie Hall on a Misfits card having allegedly turned down the offer of a rematch with Paul.
