James Toney has weighed in on the impending super fight between Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
The pound-for-pound superstars are all set to lock horns on Saturday September 13 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada for Canelo’s undisputed super-middleweight championship.
History beckons for ‘Bud’ as he sets his sights on becoming the first male fighter in the modern era to win an undisputed championship in three weight classes.
However, the unbeaten 37-year-old faces undoubtedly the toughest test of his impressive career, making the jump up two weight classes from his last outing to face Canelo.
One man who has showed an interest in the clash is Toney, who reigned as the IBF champion at 168lbs between 1993 and 1994 before he was dethroned by Roy Jones Jr in what was the first defeat of his career.
In an interview with AB Boxing News, Toney didn’t hesitate to back Crawford to get the job done against the Mexican star, as he claims the 37-year-old from Omaha will win ‘easily’.
“Easy win [for Crawford]. Easy win. Trust me … Canelo is a good fighter, but he’s not on James Toney’s level.”
Speaking to ES News, Toney confirmed that he was backing ‘Bud’ by knockout. The Hall of Famer has been a vocal critic of Alvarez in the past, saying he would have no chance in his generation. Many in the sport, particularly those backing the champion to retain his belts come September, will feel then that this prediction has a little bias.
