Hall of Famer James Toney has summed up Canelo Alvarez‘s performance in his historic clash with Terence Crawford.

The Mexican great was handed the third defeat of his professional career when he faced ‘Bud’ at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas earlier this month, surrendering his undisputed super-middleweight championship in the process.

The three judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 all in favour of the unbeaten American, who has received praise for putting on arguably the best performance of his professional career to date.

Canelo now finds himself at a crossroads in his career, with many fans and analysts left speculating whether the 35-year-old from Guadalajara could be on the verge of announcing his retirement from the sport.

Three-weight world champion Toney has now weighed in with his verdict on Canelo vs. Crawford whilst speaking to Mill City Boxing, saying ‘Canelo got destroyed’ by the newly-crowned undisputed champion at 168lbs.

“As a matter of fact, he didn’t just lose to him, he got destroyed. Basically, took him apart.”

Whilst his second reign as undisputed super-middleweight champion came to an end when he was beaten by Crawford, Canelo could have his sights set on attempting to achieve this feat for a third time with rumours circulating that a rematch between the duo could actually take place next.

The 35-year-old was reinstated as the WBC’s number one challenger at 168lbs in their latest rankings, sparking rumours that he could be targeting revenge against ‘Bud’ sooner rather than later.
