James Toney has made his prediction for a fantasy fight between Roberto Duran and Gervonta Davis.
Toney entered the professional ranks back in 1988 and would go on to win world titles across three divisions throughout his tenure.
Two decades before Toney’s debut, Duran made his. All in, he was champion in four weight classes. Known as ‘Hands of Stone,’ the Panamanian was just the second fighter whose career touched five decades.
Duran fought 119 times as a professional, tasting defeat on just 16 occasions. He was a part of the infamous ‘Four Kings’ of boxing, standing alongside Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, who all had a lasting influence on the sport during the peaks of their respective careers.
He is considered by plenty of fans and analysts as the greatest lightweight champion in history. One fighter who currently holds a belt in the division is ‘Tank’ Davis, who has knocked out 28 of his 31 opponents.
Speaking to Mill City Boxing, Toney predicted a fantasy fight between the two heavy hitters and backed the boxing legend.
“Roberto Duran, but it would have been a hell of a fight because they’re both great. but Duran, when he was at 135, nobody was touching him. It would be a brawl because either one don’t know how to go backwards.”
Though Duran is now happy watching the sport from the sidelines, ‘Tank’ is still very much looking to build his legacy. His record was almost tarnished last time out when he controversially drew with Lamont Roach Jr, and the pair look likely to run it back this Summer.
