Gervonta Davis vs Shakur Stevenson has been discussed by boxing fans for a number of years.
The two fighters are both reigning world champions, with Davis holding the WBA lightweight title, and Stevenson the current WBC lightweight champion.
Both men return to action within 7 days of one another over the next few weeks, beginning when Stevenson puts his belt on the line against unbeaten Floyd Schofield on February 22, before Davis then defends against current super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach on March 1.
‘Tank’ shocked the boxing world when he announced he plans to retire at the end of 2025, meaning time could be running out to see the potential unification against Stevenson.
One man who has offered his take on how a clash between Davis and Shakur would go is former multi-weight world champion James Toney.
Toney knows first hand what it is like to have a domestic rivalry on the world stage, having been involved in notable all-American fights against the likes of Roy Jones Jr and Evander Holyfield.
He has given his thoughts on a Davis-Stevenson match-up whilst talking to Fight Hub TV, believing it could come too soon for one of them.
“Good fight. Shakur Stevenson’s a good fighter, but Shakur Stevenson ain’t ready for that. Everybody in boxing, you so-called experts, y’all don’t know s**t about boxing.
“Shakur’s a young fighter. Let him develop and then when it’s time you make a move. But now, Tank got that momentum. It’s bad for Shakur. He’ll ruin his whole career like [Crawford did to] Errol Spence Jr.”
Toney isn’t the only big name to comment on a Davis vs. Stevenson clash, with unified super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez also making a bold prediction.
