James Toney has shared his thoughts on a potential rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia.
The American duo clashed for the first time back in April 2024, a bout that was steeped in controversy after it was later revealed that Garcia had tested positive for a banned substance in tests taken before the fight.
Garcia was initially declared as the winner via majority decision but the result was eventually overturned to a no contest. ‘King Ry’ was later handed a fine of over $1 million and banned from boxing for one year.
Haney was last in action on November 22 when he dethroned WBO world welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr in Saudi Arabia to become a three-division world champion.
As for Garcia, the California-native suffered a shock defeat to Rolando Romero in May, although the 27-year-old is expected to make his return to the ring during the early stages of 2026.
Speaking to Mill City Boxing, retired three-weight world champion Toney shared his verdict on a rematch between Haney and Garcia, as he claims he would expect there to be a ‘different outcome’ this time around.
“If Devin goes in there with more punching power, it’ll be a different outcome. Ryan Garcia, he’s a good fighter but do you know what? He ain’t fought in a while either so he better get a fight in before he fights Devin Haney again.”
It has been reported that Garcia is set to face reigning WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios next, with an official announcement expected to be made in the coming weeks. Victory for Garcia over Barrios could set up an intriguing unification clash with Haney at some stage next year.
