Tony Bellew hasn’t fought since his defeat at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk in 2018.
The former cruiserweight champion has remained prominent in the sport as a pundit for DAZN and, as a keen boxing historian, is never afraid to offer his views.
His own storied career saw him reach the highest heights when he defeated Ilunga Junior Makabu back in 2016 to lift the WBC belt. He defended it against BJ Flores before defeating former heavyweight champion David Haye, twice, in huge pay per view shows on Sky Box Office.
The final fight of his career was for all four of the cruiserweight belts owned by Usyk, and despite boxing well in the early rounds, Bellew grew tired before being knocked out in the eighth.
However, one man now wants to draw him out of retirement and take him on in his 50th contest. That man is British heavyweight Derek Chisora who admitted as much when speaking to Seconds Out.
“Between you and me, I might get Tony [Bellew] out of retirement. It will happen. We’ll do it in Liverpool or Manchester.
What’s wrong with that? I always wanted to fight him. He beat up my old manager so I just want to get revenge for David [Haye].”
When asked if he’s talked to Bellew about it, Chisora replied ‘yes’ and revealed ‘The Bomber’s response.
“We’ll do it in Liverpool or Manchester.”
Whether or not this is some classic Chisora horseplay time will tell. Bellew briefly considered a championship run in the WBC’s Bridgerweight ranks last year, but then-champion Lukasz Rozanski opted to face Lawrence Okolie and lost his belt.
In the meantime, he takes on fellow British heavyweight Joe Joyce in a must-win fight in London this weekend, and one Frank Warren thinks could be the end of the line for whoever loses.
