Canelo Alvarez is looking for an opponent for his next fight and newly crowned undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev could be an option.
‘Canelo’ has fought up at light heavyweight twice before now – once beating Sergey Kovalev by stoppage to lift a world title, and then he took on but lost to Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
Beterbiev could go straight into a rematch, which is what many people are clamouring for and what Bivol has applied for to the sanctioning bodies.
Otherwise it could be a potential defence against interim world titleholder David Benavidez or what would surely be a huge payday with Canelo.
Top trainer Robert Garcia, who is in the corner for the likes of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Vergil Ortiz, was asked by ESNews how the Mexican would get on with Beterbiev if they were to fight.
“I think Canelo beats him. I just think Canelo beats him.”
He was then asked who would win if Benavidez faced Beterbiev, and he claimed whoever wins the upcoming fight between Benavidez and David Morrell would come out on top.
“I think they beat him too. Whoever wins, Benevidez or Morrell, I just think they beat him. I just think they do. They’re fast, they throw combinations, they’re big and strong too, I just think they beat him.”
One fly in the ointment for all these fits is a potential mandatory that has been ordered by the IBF, and also the fact that the fight will likely have to happen during Riyadh Season out in Saudi Arabia so could be delayed until October next year.
