Daniel Dubois has made another change to his team after leaving trainer Don Charles.

Former heavyweight world champion Dubois was last out July when he was knocked out in the fifth round by now two-time undisputed ruler Oleksandr Usyk, who added Dubois’s IBF crown to his collection.

It was a third defeat for Dubois who has also lost previously to Usyk and Joe Joyce, and in the aftermath, he walked away from Charles, who he has worked with since August 2023.

One man who has criticised that choice is Billy Nelson, who trains fellow heavyweight Martin Bakole, along with upcoming world title challenger Lewis Crocker.

Speaking to Boxing Social, Nelson outlined why he thinks it was a poor decision for Dubois to leave a trainer who had guided him so well, including to breakout KO victories against world-ranked opponents Filip Hrgovic, Jarrell Miller and Anthony Joshua, whom he stopped inside five rounds last September.

“It’s shocking that he left Don Charles. I mean, he’s been beaten by the best fighter of his generation twice in Usyk, twice. OK, and the manner in which he’s been beat, let’s be honest, he quit twice.

“But he still beat good guys to get there, he had a good victory against Miller, he beat Hrgovic who I thought downed tools when he got cut but then I thought he did a demolition job on Anthony Joshua, so he thoroughly deserved his world title and world title shot. And to get beat against Usyk there’s no shame in it at all. He beat Fury twice, he beat Joshua twice, the guy is a generational great.”

Since then, it has been reported that Dubois is set to start working with former Joshua coach Tony Sims, who also trains Conor Benn, amongst others, from his base in Essex.
