After almost a year away from the sport, Deontay Wilder got back to winning ways this past weekend.

For the first time in three years, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ left the boxing ring with a win under his belt. His last two outings saw him lose on points to Joseph Parker and got brutally stopped by Zhilei Zhang last year inside five rounds.

Before that and after drawing the first contest in 2018, Wilder lost twice by KO to Tyson Fury in a bruising trilogy, which many people think put the stops on the American’s future world title hopes.

This past weekend, he was back in action against the little-known Tyrell Herndon and though he wasn’t at his explosive best, the former long time WBC ruler did get the win with a seventh-round stoppage.

Speaking about the contest to FightHype, Wilder’s former coach Malik Scott was honest about what he saw.

“It was his first fight back since his return. I thought he used his jab pretty good, I thought his timing was off a little bit. My favourite shot from the fight was he threw a good left hook to the liver. I’m sure him and Jay Deas have been working on that, they been working on that liver shot. As long as he can continue to listen to Don House and Jay Deas and take a couple more fights like that, I think he will be alright.”

Wilder has since spoken of his plan to take his time and get back to the very top of the division, where the likes of Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois currently hold all four of the major world titles ahead of their undisputed match on July 19.
