A former two-weight world champion has lashed out at current boxing superstar Gervonta Davis.

‘Tank’ is known for his explosive power, speed and knockout ability, all of which have made him one of boxing’s most exciting fighters.

He became one of the youngest champions in the sport at just 22-years-old and has held titles in the super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight divisions having secured big wins over the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, Rolando Romero and Ryan Garcia.

As of 2025, Davis remains undefeated, though has not been particularly active. His last fight was a victory over Frank Martin back in June 2024 and fans have long been anticipating more high-profile matchups against top fighters like a unification with Shakur Stevenson or Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Speaking to FightHype, Paulie Malignaggi has expressed his dismay at Davis picking what he perceives to be easy opponents when it was announced he would be facing Lamont Roach – a super-featherweight champion who will move up for the challenge – in March.

“Lamont Roach, if he’d made four of five defences at 135, you’d be selling me a little bit, I’d be curious. But no, you’re just recycling the same champion.

“You’re not even progressing. You’re killing the sport to line your pockets. I defend the sport, I want the best match-ups possible. You’re not going to entertain me with the B-level match-ups just cause they’re pay-per-views.”

While the main event may not be to the liking of some, the undercard for this event in Brooklyn features WBA super lightweight champion Jose Valenzuela defending his title against Gary Antuanne Russell, while the WBC super lightweight champion Alberto Puello takes on Sandor Martin.

Davis has announced that he will retire from the sport at the end of this year. Fans – and Malignaggi – will hope he can make his last twelve months count.
