Tyson Fury‘s corner came under a lot of criticism against Oleksandr Usyk, and now one of his coaches has made a U-turn on how things unfolded.
Fury fought Usyk in a memorable heavyweight title battle back in May, as the division looked to crown its first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis over 20 years ago.
It was a tight contest up until the ninth round, where Usyk dropped Fury and was on the verge of getting the knockout before Fury was saved by the bell.
Usyk then finished the fight strong in the championship rounds, with that proving to be key as the Ukrainian earned a split decision win to walk away with all four world titles and hand ‘The Gypsy King’ his first defeat.
Many boxing figures felt that Fury had too many coaches giving him different instructions in the corner, with head trainer SugarHill Steward and coach Andy Lee also joined by Tyson’s father John Fury.
Lee had previously stated that he felt ‘nothing went wrong in the corner’ – but he has now made a U-turn and admitted to Sky Sports that there may have been issues.
“If we had won the fight, nobody would have said a word, but there probably were too many voices in the corner. It’s not good for a fighter. You don’t need to be bombarded. So I’ll hold my tongue.”
Fury and Usyk will meet again in a highly-anticipated rematch on December 21, and the Brit has revealed whether there will be changes in his corner for the fight.
