Mike Tyson Explains The Problem With Modern Day Fighters

Heavyweight great Mike Tyson has revealed exactly what he believes is the problem with modern day fighters.

Known for his thunderous punching power and explosive fighting style, ‘Iron Mike’ is widely considered to be one of the greatest heavyweights to have ever graced the sport.

He wrote his name into the boxing history books way back in 1986 when he knocked out James ‘Buster’ Douglas in the second round of their Las Vegas showdown to capture the WBC heavyweight title and become the youngest heavyweight champion of all time.

Tyson added the WBA and IBF titles to his collection just months later with victories over James Smith and Tony Tucker to achieve undisputed status just days after his 21st birthday.

The 59-year-old from New York made a shock return to the sport back in November of 2024 when he suffered a points defeat to Jake Paul, a bout that sparked controversy amongst the boxing community.

In an interview with The Ring Magazine, Tyson slammed the fighters of the current era who he believes are not fighting as often as he did during his generation.

“We’re different fighters. The fighters this era should see that and know that we’re different fighters. We were more active than they are. Listen, we’re fighting four times a year. These guys are defending their title four times a year in my era. In this era, these guys defend their title one time every two years.”

‘Iron Mike’ is due to make a return to the ring in an exhibition contest against Floyd Mayweather this year, although an official announcement is yet to be made.
