Canelo Alvarez may be a lucrative fight for most boxers, but one world champion doesn’t think so anymore.
Canelo is set for a busy 2025, first returning in May when he takes on IBF champion William Scull, where a victory would see the Mexican superstar add that belt to his WBC, WBO and WBA collection and once again become undisputed at 168lbs.
A win there would then lead to Alvarez having a huge clash with fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in September, with ‘Bud’ moving up two divisions from 154lbs for the clash at super-middleweight.
While Crawford sees a fight against Canelo as a big opportunity, another reigning world champion disagrees, after 175lb king Artur Beterbiev had his say on the matter.
Beterbiev is back in action this Saturday when he defends his undisputed light-heavyweight titles against Dmitry Bivol, in a rematch from their October clash which Beterbiev won by majority decision.
In the past, Beterbiev has given interest to a bout against Canelo, but has now made a U-turn and told Fight Hub TV that it no longer appeals to him.
“No [it doesn’t make sense now]. When he was a champion in my weight, that time I wanted to fight him because I need the belt, but now no.”
Rather than face Canelo, Beterbiev’s next fight may have already been decided if he defeats Bivol, after his mandatory challenger for the WBC belt was confirmed.
