An unbeaten contender has expressed an interest in a showdown with pound-for-pound number one Terence Crawford next.
‘Bud’ Crawford is fresh off an historic victory over Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez, who he defeated via unanimous decision last Saturday night to capture the undisputed super-middleweight world championship.
The three judges at ringside had scored their monumental clash 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 all in favour of the unbeaten American, who became the first male fighter in the history of the sport to win an undisputed crown in three weight classes.
With rumours now circulating about what could be next for Crawford, one fighter that has expressed an interest in a showdown with the 37-year-old from Omaha is reigning WBC interim super-welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr, who remains unbeaten in 23 bouts since his debut back in 2016.
Speaking to YSM Sports Media, Ortiz admitted that he would be more than happy to move up to 160lbs for a clash with his countryman should the opportunity present itself to him.
“If the fight comes up, the opportunity comes up, I would love that fight … Oh yeah, why not? I mean I feel like I’m a big 154 as it is so, I was a big 140, a big 147, a big 154, I’ve already said I’d go to 160 eventually.”
Ortiz has established himself as one of the sport’s highest ranked contenders over the last 18 months, stopping 21 of the 23 opponents that he has defeated along the way.
He made his most recent ring appearance back in February when he defeated former WBA super-welterweight champion Israil Madrimov in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
