An unbeaten contender has vowed to defeat Ryan Garcia in spectacular fashion when they inevitably lock horns.
‘King Ry’ is yet to make a return to the ring since suffering a shock upset defeat to fellow countryman Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero back in May, falling short in his attempt at becoming the WBA Regular welterweight champion in the process.
Garcia was floored in the second round of their clash at the iconic Times Square in New York City before suffering the second defeat of his career, just over twelve months on from his controversial meeting with Devin Haney.
That has now led to another undefeated star to throw down the gauntlet, as speaking to Shaka Wear, reigning WBC interim super-welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz was asked if he would welcome a showdown with Garcia, as he discussed their amateur clashes.
“Hell yeah, and you know what, I’ll bring up the amateurs. So we fought in 2009, we were 11-years-old, he’s saying he beat my ass. No one got an ass to beat at 9-years-old. Pitty pat, you know it was literally just points. And we fought again in 2014, 2015, I lost a 2-in-1 decision that I thought I won, it was a close fight. I don’t think it’s a close fight today.”
Ortiz was then asked to sum up the chances of a clash between himself and Garcia taking place.
“So we have the same promoter, assuming he stays with Golden Boy, it’s a very easy fight to make.”
Ortiz made his most recent ring appearance back in February when he defeated former WBA super-welterweight champion Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The 27-year-old from Texas is expected to fight once more before the end of the year, with rumours circulating about a potential clash with Erickson Lubin taking place next.
