Oleksandr Usyk has said there is one boxing great from the sport’s golden era that he would love to share the ring with.
Usyk’s career is one of the most accomplished in modern boxing. He turned pro in 2013 after winning a gold medal in the London 2012 Olympics and quickly rose through the cruiserweight ranks, unifying all four major world titles in 2018 with a victory over Murat Gassiev.
His elite footwork, ring IQ and relentless pace helped when he then moved up to heavyweight, where he defied size disadvantages to outbox and outthink larger opponents.
His two wins over each of Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury cemented his status as an all-time great and made him a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.
Speaking to RT Fight, Usyk was asked if he could somehow fight one of the boxing legends of the past, who would it be?
“I would choose Lennox Lewis.”
Lewis was the last undisputed heavyweight ruler back in 1999 and is widely regarded as one of the best to ever do it. He beat every man he faced, including the likes of Mike Tyson and Vitali Klitschko and retired in 2003, but a fight with Usyk would have presented a whole different challenge.
Usyk is now nearing the end of his career and has said he wants the biggest fights possible, which is why he vacated his WBO belt rather than defend it against Fabio Wardley and has instead said he would like to fight the big puncing American, Deontay Wilder.
