Moses Itauma could find himself taking on Oleksandr Usyk very soon.
At just 20-years-old, Itauma is viewed as one of the most exciting rising stars in all of boxing, having easily brushed aside all of the opponents he has faced to date.
He currently holds an unbeaten record of 13-0, with 11 of those wins coming by knockout, and last time out claimed the biggest win of his career so far when he stopped former world title challenger Dillian Whyte inside the very first round.
Following his win over Whyte, Itauma stated that he felt he was ready now to face Usyk, the current undisputed heavyweight champion who has beaten fighters such as Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois in recent years.
Itauma’s team are believed to want their man to gradually build up to the fight instead, but Team Usyk director Sergey Lapin has declared that they would be willing to make the fight provided the Brit can beat one man first.
Speaking To Pro Boxing Fans, Lapin revealed that Itauma and Fabio Wardley should meet in order to determine who faces Usyk next.
“It would be great to see Fabio face Itauma for the world title. It would be a truly exciting fight and a serious test for both before facing the big boss of boxing.”
Lapin’s comments could mean that Usyk plans to vacate the WBO belt, with Wardley the current mandatory challenger after stopping Joseph Parker in the 11th round of their heavyweight showdown at the O2 Arena last month, extending his record to 20-0-1 in the process.
A fight between Itauma and Wardley would be unlikely though, with the two men both part of the same stable under trainer Ben Davison, meaning an alternative method may have to be found in order to decide who faces Usyk next.
