Vasiliy Lomachenko looked all set to face Gervonta Davis this year after they both came through their last opponents in impressive fashion.
Lomachenko rolled back the years with a dominant performance against George Kambosos Jr in May, becoming the first man to stop the Australian and picking up the vacant IBF world title in the process.
Davis made a long awaited return against previously unbeaten American Frank Martin in June. ‘Tank’ did what he always seems to and knocked out his man with an uppercut followed by a devastating left hand in the eighth round to retain his WBA strap.
Talks for a unification fight between the two seemed to be progressing well until Lomachenko’s manager revealed that his man wasn’t motivated to fight again this year and pulled the plug on negotiations.
The Ukrainian hadn’t been heard from since but showed up in Los Angeles to watch the Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov card.
Whilst at the event he told Fight Hub TV of his intentions to return in 2025.
“From next year. Right now the plan is to rest then all boxing business in the new year.”
Loma then got involved in a fiery ringside altercation with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and in an interview with DAZN gave his version of events.
“Stevenson just want money, he want to use my name for the money that’s it. I said okay let’s go fight right now.”
And when asked if Shakur was an opponent he would want on his return, Loma was definitive with his response.
“Of course.”
Lomachenko vs Stevenson would pit two of the smartest boxing brains against each other in a fascinating fight for the fans.
