Andre Ward and Bernard Hopkins are in agreement on who they believe to be the greatest fighter to have ever laced up the gloves.
Both Ward and Hopkins are widely considered to be two of the best fighters of the modern era, and in the eyes of many fans two of the greatest to have ever graced the sport entire.
Ward remained unbeaten throughout the course of his decorated professional career, reigning as the unified super-middleweight champion between 2009 and 2015 before he made the move up to 175lbs to rack up back-to-back victories over Sergey Kovalev.
Speaking on the AK & Barak Show, Ward made no mistake in naming the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson as the greatest fighter of all time in his opinion.
“Come on man, come on, Sugar! Nah man, I love Leonard, I love Sugar Ray Leonard, but imma say Robinson, to me, and this changes sometimes but today, that’s my greatest fighter of all time, the amount fights that he fought, the type of guys that he fought, the risks he took, it’s gotta be Sugar Ray Robinson.”
Hopkins – the undisputed middleweight champion for four years between 2001 and 2005 and the sport’s oldest ever titleholder – is in agreement with his countryman on who he believes is the greatest fighter to have ever graced the sport, as revealed in a conversation with the media.
“The best fighter ever is Sugar Ray Robinson. To me the best fighter after that is Muhammad Ali, and then the debate starts from on and on from there.”
Robinson, who remains one of the few fighters in boxing history to win a world title on six separate occasions, is often regarded in this manner by fans and analysts around the world.
After reigning as the world welterweight champion between 1946 and 1951, he jumped up to middleweight where he captured the world title five times within just shy of a decade.
