Hall of Famer Andre Ward has revealed exactly how he scored the historic clash between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez.
‘Bud’ Crawford cemented his place in boxing folklore as he defeated the Mexican icon via unanimous decision at a packed out Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, capturing the undisputed super-middleweight championship in the process.
The judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 all in favour of the unbeaten American great, who became the first male fighter in the history of the sport to win an undisputed title in three separate weight classes.
One man who witnessed the historic showdown between ‘Bud’ and Canelo first hand is two-time unified world champion Andre Ward, who was a part of the commentary team on Netflix’s broadcast on Saturday night.
Speaking on All The Smoke Fight, Ward admitted that he gave Canelo the edge in just four rounds in his clash with ‘Bud’.
“I gave Canelo four rounds and I seen y’all playing with me before the fight, the Canelo fans, I seen y’all trying to put the meme up about me giving Crawford every round, I seen y’all, I seen that, I just didn’t comment on it.
Y’all underestimating your boy’s professionalism and integrity but I didn’t give Crawford every round, I played it down the middle like I was supposed to.”
A number of prominent figures within the sport have had their say on the scorecards, with many even claiming that they believe the cards should have been a lot wider in favour of Crawford, who has been praised for putting on arguably the best performance of his decorated professional career, despite making the move up in two weight classes.
