Two-weight world champion Andre Ward has issued a key update ahead of a potential comeback to boxing.
The 41-year-old from California announced his retirement from the sport back in 2017, shortly after he defeated Russia’s Sergey Kovalev in their light-heavyweight world title rematch.
Ward became one of the few great champions in boxing history to retire unbeaten, winning all 32 of his career outings whilst becoming a world title holder at super-middleweight and light-heavyweight.
He shared the ring with a number of highly-rated opponents along the way, racking up victories over the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch to name just a few.
Rumours of a potential comeback for Ward began circulating earlier this year after the 41-year-old revealed he would be open to facing two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a sensational claim.
Speaking to Fight Hype, Ward was asked if he is still open to a potential return to the ring, as he claims he could be tempted into making a comeback if it ‘makes sense’ for him.
“I’m enjoying what I’m doing man. I’m enjoying life and you know, I’m just enjoying what I’m doing. So, you know, time will tell if any of that stuff materialises.
“I’m certainly not chasing it. I’m certainly not trying to do too much and trying to get nothing like that … If something like that happens and it makes sense, we’ll see.”
It’s no secret that Ward has kept in good shape despite being in retirement for over eight years, leaving fans and analysts wondering whether the former pound-for-pound star is just waiting for the right opportunity to come along before he decides to make a shock return.
