Fabio Wardley has been reflecting on what he must do differently in his rematch with Daniel Dubois next weekend.
Wardley had Dubois down early in what was the first defence of his WBO title back in May, but that possibly gave him a false sense of confidence and hope that he could finish the job early.
Instead, ‘DDD’ gathered himself and began to land shots of his own, systematically breaking down the Ipswich man with little coming back. Eventually, the referee stepped in to stop the fight in round 11 with Wardley still on his feet but offering nothing.
Speaking to Queensberry Promotions, Wardley admitted what he must do differently in the rematch after being too one-dimensional in the first fight.
“One thing is, I need to be able to adjust on the fly. I think I got very single-minded the first time around and I was just going in a straight line.
“Not to be too direct, I was throwing punches in a straight line, but mentally wise too, I wasn’t deviating from what I decided was the objective here and that was obviously to take him out and there was no kind of rationale or take a second or give yourself a minute, back up, erase up, reassess.
“It was just head down, no, crack on, power through, power through, and it didn’t pan out in the same way, so I think there’s just going to be a bit more of a relaxed approach to it.”
Dubois has already spoken of his desire to see off Wardley and move on to what would be a huge unification with Tyson Fury, should he come through his December WBA showdown with Anthony Joshua.
