Fabio Wardley and Oleksandr Usyk are former sparring partners turned world champions, and a fight between the two is one that many boxing fans would love to see.
Wardley is the recently crowned WBO ruler, having been elevated to full champion when Usyk vacated his belt rather than face his mandatory last year.
Wardley famously has only a white collar boxing background but beat Justis Huni and Joseph Parker in impressive knockout fashion last year, so he is in a good run of form.
The 31-year-old has now won 19 of his 21 fights by KO, with one draw to Frazer Clarke, which he avenged with an impressive first-round KO in the rematch a few months later.
While speaking to The Stomping Ground out in the United States, Wardley’s interview was interrupted by Usyk, who was passing by and was quickly asked about a fight with the Brit.
“Me, with Fabio? No problem. It’s not my problem, it’s the managers. [He’s a] good guy, we’re sparring together. He’s a world champion. Listen, boxing’s a great sport, He is world champion. So am I.”
The question was then asked again about a potential fight with Wardley sometime down the line.
“Maybe, maybe, maybe.”
For his part, Wardley has always said he would be keen to challenge himself against the best. For now, though, Usyk is biding his time after calling out Deontay Wilder, who is now fighting Derek Chisora in April, so he could end up taking on the winner later in the year.
