Frank Warren is the latest to have his say on Conor Benn‘s shock move to Dana White’s new boxing stable.
White’s Zuffa Boxing is hoping to make inroads into the sport, dominated, at least in the UK, by Frank Warren’s Queensbury and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom.
His first major move was to announce the shock signing of Benn late last week, despite Benn having spent his entire career with Matchroom, including two difficult years in which he was banned after failing drug tests, though Hearn remained fully supportive throughout.
Speaking to Sky Sports Boxing, Warren expressed sympathy for Hearn.
“I side with Eddie because at the end of the day he’s stood by him through some seriously difficult moments with the drug testing, two failures, he stood there and kept battling for his man.
“Conor, I’ve seen some of the videos of some of the things he said about loyalty and money not being the be-all and end-all but that’s how it’s ended up being at the end of the day. He’s not the first, and he won’t be the last to do it.”
He did then express surprise at the deal from Benn’s perspective.
“I think Conor’s had a real touch financially, because I still haven’t seen what justifies him getting that much money. He’s not won anything, he’s not fought anybody.”
Benn is now hoping to fight for his maiden world title against the likes of current welterweight belt holders Ryan Garcia or Rolly Romero, though he has also called out Shakur Stevenson.
