Daniel Dubois retained his WBO heavyweight title with a ruthless victory over domestic rival Fabio Wardley on Saturday night.
‘DDD’ regained world heavyweight honours when he faced Wardley in their thrilling first bout back in May, stopping the 31-year-old in the penultimate round of their showdown at the Co-Op Live in Manchester.
The British heavyweight duo crossed paths once again on Saturday night, doing battle for Dubois’ WBO heavyweight crown at a packed out O2 Arena in London, England.
Dubois started the bout at a relentless pace, dropping his countryman inside the opening 15 seconds of the bout with a crushing right hand that left Wardley on unsteady legs.
The 29-year-old needed just one more round to get the job done as the towel was thrown in by Wardley’s corner in what was a brave effort from the popular Ipswich-native.
Speaking to talkSPORT, promoter Frank Warren spoke highly of Dubois’ performance against Wardley as he claims ‘DDD’ put on a ‘powerful performance’ to retain his heavyweight crown.
“Well it was a powerful performance. You know, he’s in with someone who’s got a good chin, who showed tremendous courage but as soon as that bell went he was on him, unloading on him, caught him and after that it was Daniel’s fight.”
Dubois staked his claim as one of, if not the best active heavyweight on the planet with that win over Wardley, who is now expected to take a deserved break from the sport having been through two bruising clashes with his hard-hitting domestic foe.
