Deontay Wilder is back in the heavyweight picture and is already being called out by a former world title challenger.

Wilder was once one of the biggest names and hardest fights in the banner division. The American ruled with a monstrous right hand and knocked out every man he faced until he came up against Tyson Fury and was twice knocked out in consecutive fights. After that, he lost twice more to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker, but didn’t walk away from the sport.

Instead, he got one straightforward win under his belt last June and then returned last weekend against fellow 49 fight veteran Derek Chisora. In an entertaining fight, it was Wilder who landed the bigger blows and walked away after 12 rounds with a points win, albeit not having looked at his best.

Speaking to Seconds Out, Dillian Whyte has reiterated his desire to fight the former WBC champion.

“Good fight, why not. I think Deontay Wilder is at a good stage. You know, it’s all about match-making and timing. I think Deontay Wilder, now is a good time to get him. I would love to fight Deontay.

“I’ve wanted to fight Deontay for half of my career and it ain’t happened yet. It’s crazy, two elite guys, I was number one for his title for so long, and the fight didn’t happen, so I’m not very hopeful it will happen now.”

Whyte was stopped inside a round by Moses Itauma last time he fought late last year, while Wilder has already called out Anthony Joshua, so a fight between these two remains some way off.
