Wladimir Klitschko could be set to make a sensational return to boxing.
The former unified world heavyweight champion hasn’t fought since losing to Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium back in 2017.
That fight came around 18 months after he’d lost his belts to Tyson Fury back in Germany, bringing to an end a near-decade of dominance for the Ukrainian.
Fury has since gone on to remain at the top of the division in the period since, setting up the fight with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight crown back in May.
It was Usyk that was victorious in that fight by split decision, leading to the two men having a highly-anticipated rematch in Riyadh this weekend.
Klitschko will be in attendance at the fight, after rumours over the past few weeks that he could be set to come out of retirement to try and break George Foreman’s record as the oldest heavyweight champion in history.
Foreman was 46 when he achieved that accolade, with Klitschko set to turn 49 in March, and he sent out a threat to the division on social media and revealed when he would potentially be ready to make a ready.
“Ready on the spot.”
Klitschko did admit though that the ongoing war in Ukraine is his main focus right now.
“There are a lot of rumors these days about a possible comeback. At the moment, I’m not concerned with my return to boxing, but with the return of Russians to their country, outside Ukraine.
“And let me be clear: I’ve never stopped training. So IF there was to be a fight, I’d be ready on the spot. But this weekend I’m just going to see a fight with a talented Ukrainian. Go Usyk!”
It appears that the best chance of Klitschko returning to boxing would be if Fury is able to defeat Usyk in their rematch this weekend, and ‘The Gypsy King’ needed just two words to sum up if he thinks his old rival would be capable of becoming world champion again.
