Canelo Alvarez‘s next move may be about to become clear.
The unified super-middleweight champion has been searching for his next opponent ever since defeating Edgar Berlanga to retain his belts back in September.
The fight that has been discussed most within boxing has been a clash against fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford, with ‘Bud’ announcing his intentions to move up two weight classes to 168lbs for the fight.
It seems that another option has now emerged though, and could allow Canelo the chance to once again become undisputed champion at 168lbs.
The Mexican superstar holds the WBC, WBA and WBO titles, but lost the IBF strap after choosing not to take on his mandatory challenger in favour of the more lucrative fight against Berlanga.
That allowed William Scull and Vladimir Shishkin to fight in Germany for the vacant belt, with Scull winning by unanimous decision to become the new IBF super-middleweight champion.
Scull has now revealed to Punos Cubanos that an offer has been made to face Canelo, and that further discussions are expected this week.
“The truth is that there are three offers: to Berlanga, to Canelo and at the time there was talk of [Christian] Mbilli but I think that was left behind because the offer was not very good.
“But we are aiming to unify with Canelo Alvarez. And now on January 10 we will speak over the phone and they will tell us more later.
“I will keep you informed on what is coming because this is going to be a great year.
“That will be a good fight for me [with Canelo] to continue dreaming and continue making history.”
While a fight against Scull would give Canelo a chance to become undisputed again, it may not be a lucrative option for him just like he felt in September, and Alvarez has instead named the one man he would love to fight.
