A former world champion that recently fought Canelo Alvarez has failed a drugs test following his latest fight.

Canelo is known for being extremely active in his career, having taken on a number of big name opponents over the years. He is the current undisputed super-middleweight champion, having campaigned at 168lbs for the past seven years and definitely most of the top contenders.

That includes Jaime Munguia, who has now been found to have failed a doping test following his recent victory over Bruno Surace in May, as reported by the Ring Magazine.

“VADA informed all relevant parties Wednesday that Jaime Munguia’s A-sample returned an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites following a urine sample on May 4 when he defeated Bruno Surace, sources told The Ring.

“Munguia has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. Munguia defeated Surace in the super middleweight rematch after he was KOed by the Frenchman in December in The Ring’s Upset of the Year.”

Munguia was stopped in the sixth round by Surace when they initially met last year, with the rematch seeing the Mexican gain revenge before this new development emerged.

The fight took place on the undercard of Canelo’s latest outing, where he defeated William Scull to add the IBF belt back to his WBC, WBA and WBO collection.

Canelo had taken on Munguia in May 2024, dropping his rival on his way to a unanimous decision verdict after score of 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112. The younger man would subsequently go and train with Alvarez and his longtime coach, Eddy Reynoso.

Munguia had previously reigned as the WBO light middleweight champion from 2018 to 2019, with this latest news a huge blow in his attempts to once again claim world honours.
