Conor Benn has finally announced his next fight, and it hasn’t gone down well with one world champion who thinks he is ‘running.
Benn fought twice in 2025, with very different outcomes. The first fight with his long-time rival Chris Eubank Jr saw him put on a physical display, though he ended up losing a unanimous decision on the cards and was unable to overcome the natural size disadvantage.
However, months later in the rematch, it was he who dominated despite being the smaller man and he earned multiple knockdowns on his way to a one-sided points win of his own.
Since then, he has been pursuing his maiden world title fight and has called out the likes of multi-weight champion Devin Haney, as well as Ryan Garcia, who became WBC champion last month.
Benn had often said he was also keen to challenge WBA champion Rolly Romero for his belt, but then, in a shock move, left Matchroom and joined Dana White’s Zuffa boxing and signed to fight the ageing former champion Regis Prograis on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s first fight back in more than a year against Arslanbek Makmuhdov.
In a new post on X. Romero didn’t hold back in his view of Benn and that latest fight announcement.
“Conner Benn is garbage, I didn’t wanna scare him off, but he ran away anyways 😂”
Benn, who is now 29, is signed with Zuffa Boxing for just one fight at this stage, but the Prograis contest is not what many fans were hoping for. What comes next – including a potential shot at Romero’s WBA belt – remains to be seen.
