A newly-crowned world champion has sent a sensational call-out to unbeaten ‘Monster’ David Benavidez.
Throughout the course of his professional career, which began back in 2013, Benavidez has won the WBC super-middleweight title on two occasions and was recently declared as the WBC champion at light-heavyweight after former champion Dmitry Bivol vacated his crown.
The 28-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona extended his undefeated record to 30-0 with a unanimous decision victory over David Morrell on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
It was his second appearance at 175lbs having made the move up from 168lbs last June, when he defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk to capture the WBC ‘Interim’ light-heavyweight title.
As he prepares to make the first defence of his world title, ‘The Monster’ has been been called out in a shock claim made by newly crowned WBA Regular welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, who defeated Ryan Garcia in a career best performance at the beginning of the month.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, ‘Rolly’ claimed he would become the first fighter to defeat Benavidez
“I wanna whoop David Benavidez’s ass. Look I’m gonna be the first one to ever call this person out, I wanna fight Benavidez. Mexican monster? They call me the boogeyman over here. I’ll go to 168. I wanna fight the Mexican monster.”
Despite his claims, a bout between Romero and Benavidez is unlikely to ever happen, with the huge weight discrepancy playing a major factor in this.
‘Rolly’ made the move up to 147lbs to face Garcia on May 2, whilst Benavidez now campaigns at 175lbs and has admitted previously that he does not intend to move back down in weight in the future.
