World Champion Wants Usyk Fight At Cruiserweight But Is Willing To Go To Heavyweight To Beat Him

Oleksandr Usyk has already just about completed everything he can in boxing.

Usyk won a gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012 before then turning professional. Just six years after his first paid fight, he became the undisputed cruiserweight world champion having beaten the likes of Mairis Briedis and Tony Bellew.

He then moved up to heavyweight and saw off the challenge of Derek Chisora before back-to-back fights with Anthony Joshua in 2021 and 2022 saw him win the IBF, WBO and WBA belts before then retaining them in the rematch.

Usyk defended the three titles once more against Daniel Dubois in August 2023 before an undisputed showdown in May ended in another win and him adding Tyson Fury’s WBC belt of to his collection.

The pair are to rematch in December but already other fighters are lining up for their shot at the pound-for-pound great.

One of them is Gilberto Ramirez, a former super-middleweight champion who recently moved up to cruiserweight and in March claimed the WBA title with a win over Arsen Goulamirian. His only loss came at the fists of Dmitry Bivol in November 2022 when he challenged for the Russian’s WBA light heavyweight belt.

In an interview with iFL TV he said would be happy to fight Usyk at either cruiserweight or heavyweight.

“Of course, that’s a fight that I want. He’s a heavyweight right now but I think he can go back down, if not I can go up. I’ve been following him, I like the style he has, he was a small guy and he went to heavyweight and I’m trying to do the same thing as him.”

Ramirez told Seconds Out that he believes he can beat the ‘small’ heavyweight.

“Usyk is a small heavyweight but a champion right. I think it would be a good match. I have been watching him and following him a lot and that’s one of my goals, to be undisputed at cruiserweight, then heavyweight, and I’d probably meet him at heavyweight.”

First, Ramirez puts his WBA cruiserweight title on the line in a world championship unification against WBO champion Chris Billam-Smith in Riyadh this Saturday.
