Shakur Stevenson has promised fans that his true level will show when in against the best opposition.
Having moved up to the lightweight ranks in 2023, he became a three-weight world champion with a win over Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC belt.
Despite Stevenson having no immediate plans to jump up again to the 140 ranks, fans would like to see it in the future, particularly a match-up against two-division champion Teofimo Lopez.
However, Lopez told the It Is What It Is podcast that he isn’t keen on the fight because he has seen how defeat affects his rival, looking back to a 2015 amateur loss as proof.
“To be real, I ain’t trying to give the man his first loss. I’ll let somebody else handle that. I ain’t trying to deal with that. I’ve seen Shakur lose in the amateurs cause we all from that class, and it ain’t a good look.
It was one time especially in Vegas, National Golden Gloves 2015, same year me and Jaron Boots Ennis won. Shakur lost, man. He lost to Ruben Villa and he wanted to go up to the rooftop of the hotel and wanted to jump off. Yeah. I ain’t trying to have actual blood on my hands. That Olympics s**t, him tearing up, that ain’t nothing.”
Stevenson is currently sitting on the sidelines recovering from a hand injury suffered in sparring but has said he will return in February of 2025 to face number one contender William Zepeda.
