A former world champion has apologised to his opponent after his latest performance.
William Scull was dethroned of his IBF super-middleweight title after he was outpointed in by far the biggest fight of his career to date by pound-for-pound star and newly-crowned undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez in Riyadh on May 2.
The 32-year-old from Cuba put on a below-par performance against the Mexican icon in what was an opportunity for him to pull off a monumental upset and become the undisputed champion at 168lbs.
In a revelation made by Canelo himself, the 34-year-old has shared details of how Scull apologised to him just moments after their showdown at the Anb Arena.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Canelo was asked if he was frustrated with Scull and his underwhelming performance, as he revealed the conversation the pair had in the immediate aftermath of their bout.
“Yeah, a little bit. I said to him you cannot win a fight like that, fighting like that.
He said ‘I’m sorry, you know it’s my first time, I just tried to put up a good fight and I’m so sorry’.”
Canelo will now go on to face fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Friday September 12. The fight was announced shortly after Canelo handed Scull the first defeat of his career.
‘Bud’ Crawford will be making the jump up to 168lbs to challenge Canelo for his undisputed championship, as he bids to become the first fighter in boxing history to accomplish this feat in three weight classes.
