An unbeaten two-weight world champion believes he is capable of becoming the greatest fighter of all time.
The man in question is ‘The Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez, who has established himself as one of the best fighters on the planet in the last few years.
The 28-year-old from Arizona currently holds the WBC light-heavyweight title, although he did reign as the WBC world champion at 168lbs on two occasions between 2017 and 2020.
Benavidez made the move up to 175lbs last year after he failed to secure a showdown with Canelo Alvarez, making his debut at light-heavyweight with a comprehensive victory over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
He is set to make his highly-anticipated return to the ring this weekend when he makes the maiden defence of his WBC light-heavyweight title against Britain’s Anthony Yarde at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on the Inside The Ring Show, Benavidez claimed that his ‘lifelong dream’ is to go on and become the greatest fighter in boxing history, something he says he is definitely going to accomplish.
“I have had one dream since I was three years old, and that’s to become the greatest boxer of all time. And that’s exactly what we are going to accomplish. We’re almost there, and we are going to keep going until there is no one left to say anything bad about me.”
Should he come through his upcoming title defence against Yarde without a hitch, ‘The Mexican Monster’ will have his eyes on a potential clash with unified WBA, WBO and IBF light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, an opportunity that would see him become the undisputed king at 175lbs should he be victorious.
