World Champion Vows To Retire Canelo Alvarez: “He’ll Face Me And Never Fight Again”

An unbeaten world champion has vowed to send Canelo Alvarez into retirement.

Canelo reclaimed the undisputed super-middleweight championship after he defeated William Scull via unanimous decision on May 3, adding the IBF crown to his WBC, WBA and WBO world titles.

The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico is now set to face Terence Crawford in a mega-fight on September 12, with the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas playing host to arguably the biggest fight in boxing right now.

Another fighter who has been on the Mexican star’s radar for quite some time is newly crowned WBC light-heavyweight champion David Benavidez, who believes he can defeat Canelo should he be given the opportunity to fight him in the near future.

Speaking on ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT with Andre Ward, Benavidez was asked if he believes Canelo is actually scared to face him before claiming the Mexican could walk away from the sport if he is not victorious over ‘The Monster.’

“I don’t think any fighter is scared either but I feel like he knows that it’s the toughest fight and that in his head he potentially knows that he could lose, that’s what I know, I know that for a fact.

“That’s why I know he’s not taking this fight, I don’t think that he’s scared of me, I think he will fight me, but he knows that if he loses this fight then he’s probably gonna retire. So that’s a big if for him.”

Benavidez – who moved up from super-middleweight due to frustrations at not landing the Canelo fight – is now set to begin his reign as world champion at 175lbs, with the first defence of his WBC title set to be announced in the coming weeks.
