Retired two-weight world champion Zab Judah has shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul.
It was announced in a press conference by Most Valuable Promotions CEO Nakisa Bidarian last month that the controversial bout would have a maximum weight limit of 195lbs in place for both fighters, who are also expected to wear 12oz gloves over 10, three-minute rounds.
Speaking to Mill City Boxing, former undisputed welterweight champion Judah was asked about the initial press tour for the fight, which saw a relatively subdued Davis.
“Hey listen, they’re promoting, that’s how Tank is, that’s Tank’s personality, he’s coming in there [like] ‘I’m the destroyer, I ain’t doing a whole bunch of laughing and giggling and playing’, so I get how his persona is ‘I don’t do a lot of talking, I’m a killer’ … Good fighters don’t like to talk, they don’t want to talk …
“I think it’s [12oz gloves] good for Jake but it’s a disadvantage for Tank … That would have been my negotiation outline ‘okay you got the weight on me, give me the smaller gloves then’ … See when you’re great, you don’t have to explain to nobody about what you’re doing, you just show them and teach them, that’s it.”
Davis announced earlier this year that he intends to retire from the sport by the end of 2025 – and has since confirmed that plan – meaning his exhibition bout against Paul could be his final ever ring appearance, much to the frustration of fans around the world who had been hoping to see ‘Tank’ lock horns with WBC world lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson in the near future.
As for Paul, it is yet another big spectacle in his campaign, building on a controversial event with Mike Tyson and, most recently, a points win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr,
