Zhilei Zhang stopped Deontay Wilder in five to keep his world heavyweight title dreams alive. The American now faces the toughest decision of his career.
At 40 and 38-years-old respectively and with over 60 knockouts between them it was hard to imagine a scenario where the loser of the bout didn’t consider retirement.
Add that to Wilder’s second below-par performance in a row and his statement before the fight that defeat could indeed spell the end of his career, most in the sport expect him to call it day.
‘Big Bang’ Zhang may feel otherwise, and in his post-fight statement has advised fans not to write his hard-hitting rival off yet. He also thanked those involved and confirmed he would be back in the ring soon.
“Goodbye the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It’s always been a pleasure fighting here. The world is watching the Kingdom becoming the center of boxing now.
Thank you to my dance partner The Bronze Bomber. I always respect you as a man, a father and a warrior. I felt your power Saturday night, the power that can knock anyone out clean. I’m happy we both came out the ring healthy and safe. Go back to your family and enjoy your time. Boxing is great with The Bronze Bomber. Don’t write him off just yet.
Thank you to my team. Thank you Queensberry Promotions [and] Matchroom Boxing for working together for this historical event. Special thank you to Turki Alalshikh, the man who makes things happen. Can’t wait to get back in the ring again.”
Wilder is yet to make an official statement on his next move.
Zhang goes on to bigger and better things following the victory and has called for a fight with Anthony Joshua in September, although that particular honour is more likely to land in the lap of Daniel Dubois.
