Dereck Chisora continues Indian summer with early stoppage of Artur Szpilka

Dereck Chisora brutally halts Artur Szpilka to continue a good run of form for the veteran heavyweight

You know what you get with veteran Finchley heavyweight Dereck Chisora. He comes forward, he has great heart and durability and… he apparently struggles with southpaws, although strangely all his defeats have come against orthodox fighters or switch-hitters. They gave him a tricky, fringe world-class left-hander in Artur Szpilka of Poland on this night, but both men found openings from the very beginning and Chisora scored a brutal knockout early in the second round of 10.

Szpilka moved well, probing with his right jab and probably took the opening round, while Chisora stalked and threatened with the arcing right hand. The second began in similar fashion before Chisora landed a big right to the head and Szpilka immediately retreated to the ropes, clearly hurt. Dereck landed several clean follow-up shots to body and head before the referee jumped in, perhaps a tad belatedly, though he was caught in two minds with the Pole never hitting the canvas.

Following on from beating Senad Gashi, pushing Dillian Whyte all the way for a second time, and knocking out Carlos Takam, this latest win puts Chisora right in the mix for a very big fight next time out. He and his team called out former WBO champion Joseph Parker immediately after the victory.
