Zepeda wins, Lopez surprises 5-1 favorite Vences
Title seeking Jose Zepeda, who lost a close decision to junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez last year, won a workman like 10-round unanimous decision over Kendo Castaneda Tuesday night at “The Bubble” MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.
Scores were 97-93, 98-92, and 98-92.
Zepeda, a powerful southpaw, fired his right jab. A couple of lefts found Castaneda. Zepeda,31. was sharp. Castaneda,26, looked befuddled. Zepeda (32-2, 25 KOs) threw more punches in round two. Castaneda was hanging in, but couldn’t land. He switched to southpaw in round three. Didn’t help much. Zepeda unloaded some sweet shots to the body. Zepeda continued to beat down Castaneda (17-2, 8 KOs) in round four. A check right to the head had to sting.
Castaneda connected with a left in round five. He needed to punch more. Problem was, Zepeda strafed him with punches. Castaneda did a little better in round six. Zepeda looked to be coasting. Zepeda tried to get back in control in round seven, but Castaneda found more success. The round was close. Castaneda forced the action in round eight. Zepeda jabbed. Landed a counter. Went to the body.
The rally was effective, but Castaneda battled back. Zepeda circled in round nine. Another counter connected. He was picking up the pace. He appeared to have found his second wind. Castaneda had no answer when Zepeda punched. The round was all his.
Castaneda would need a knockout in the 10th and final round to win. He tried. Zepeda countered. A combination connected. Castaneda landed a few low blows, but nothing significant.
“It was a good performance,” said Zepeda. “I can do better. We’re work harder and harder to get a title shot.”
Luis Alberto Lopez upset Andy Vences by split decision in a 10-round super featherweight contest.
Scores were 96-94 twice for Lopez, and 96-94 Vences.
In round one, both fighters landed some solid punches. The taller Vences, though he crouched, jabbed, while Lopez fired hooks. Vences was busier. The aggressive Lopez (21-2, 11 KOs) connected with a few right hands in round two. Vences,29, jabbed up and down. He also landed combination. Lopez took the punches well. A sneaky right landed.
Rounds three and four were close and intense. Vences (22 -2, 12 KOs) connected with a check hook. A right also landed. Lopez,26, worked his own jab. He fired wild hooks. Vences continued to work. Lopez looked a little gassed at the end of the stanza. Vences kept working his stick in round five. A clash of heads (accidental) bloodied both fighters. Lopez was bleeding from a cut near his right eye. Vences appeared to have the edge heading into the second half of the fight. He landed a left hook in round six. Lopez rallied, landing a combination and uppercut. Vences was hurt. A big right connected. Vences was wobbly. He fought back but walked slowly back to his corner. Vences came out punching in round seven. Another accidental butt created a butt over Vences left eye. Vences landed a number of overhand rights. Lopez fired but missed most of his heavy shots.
It was Lopez’s turn to rally in round eight. He connected with a few hooks. Vences went back to popping his jab. A right followed. Lopez landed a left off Vences mouth in round nine. Vences connected with a combination.
Entering the 10th and final round, the bout was very close. Lopez went to the body. He wanted to fire his right. Vences clocked him with a combo. Lopez landed a counter right. A left thudded home. That left might have won him the fight.
Undercut results: Andres Cortez won his 13th straight fight, capturing a hard-fought unanimous decision over Alejandro Salinas (10-4, 9 KOs). Cortez was cut and knocked down but rallied to win the 10 rounder. Scores were 76-74, 79-73, 77-74.
Welterweight Genaro Gamez needed less than a round to put away Raymond Yanong. Gamez, now 10-1, scored the seventh knockout of his career. Yanong, who fought two weeks ago, drops to 11-6.
Gabriel Muratalla 4-0, 3 KOs), who fought three weeks ago, won a unanimous decision over Sergio Lopez (4-6, 3 KOs) in a four-rounder. The preschool teacher was forced to go the distance for the first time in his short career.
